Spanish actress Penelope Cruz won the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday for her role in “Parallel Mother” directed by Pedro Almodovar (Madris Parallas).
Accepting the award, Cruz said, “Thank you, Pedro, you have done a magical job, I adore you.” The film tells the story of two women who give birth to their children on the same day and the same nursery school, and Penelope Cruz embodies the role of a forty-year-old photographer who lives a turbulent life.
This year, in its 78th edition, the festival witnessed the return of major stars of Hollywood films and studios to Venice, where films from 59 countries were shown. Arab cinema came out without any awards in the various competitions in which it participated.
The French film “Happening”, directed by French-Lebanese director Audrey Diwan, won the Golden Lion Award for Best Film, and came in second place, winning the Silver Lion Award. The Italian film “The Hand of God” was produced by Netflix.
Also produced by Netflix, director Jane Campion won the Silver Lion for “The Power of Dog”.
The Golden Lion for Best Actor went to Finnish John Arquilla for “On the job: the missing”, while American actress Maggie Gyllenhaal won for Best Screenplay for “The Lost Daughter.”
The Special Jury Prize went to the Italian movie “Ill Buco”, while the “Marcello Master Jani” Award for Best Young Actor, Italian Filippo Scotti, went to the Netflix movie “The Hand of God”.
