Real Madrid reduced the difference to only 3 points, between it and its rivals Atletico Madrid, leaders of the Spanish First Division, after the royal club, on Saturday, achieved a difficult victory with a clean goal to its host Valladolid.
Brazilian midfielder Casemiro scored the only goal in a game marred by caution after he headed a cross from fellow teammate Toni Kroos into the net after 65 minutes.
Real Madrid remained in second place, but raised its tally to 52 points from 24 games, while Atletico top the standings with 55 points and still have a match. Barcelona, who faces Cadiz on Sunday, is third with 46 points.
Valladolid went into the game without a win in the league since January 2, and started strong and set up two early chances, but neither Fabian Oriana nor Sidi Janco could score the net against Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Casemiro’s header from close range was Real’s only attempt in the first half, and the referee canceled two goals for striker Mariano Diaz for offside.
