Mank leads the Golden Globe … and the output is at the forefront

“Mank” topped the list of nominations for the “Golden Globe” awards, which this year was characterized by a strong female presence, in contrast to the growing weight of “Netflix” on the film sector.

“Mank”, a black and white Netflix movie signed by director David Fincher, dives into the golden age of Hollywood, by following screenwriter Hermann Mankiewicz, played by Gary Oldman.

The work won six nominations, ahead of another Netflix movie, Aaron Sorkin’s “Trial of 7 from Chicago”, ranking second with five nominations.

The “Golden Globe” nominations are the starting point for the awards season in Hollywood, as the wheel of production has been greatly disrupted by the health crisis associated with the Coronavirus.

Absence of big names
The absence of big names this year, as expected, has been in favor of films produced from streaming platforms, which were among the main beneficiaries of the home quarantine measures.

Netflix’s business won a total of 22 nominations, compared to 17 last year. It was followed by its rival, “Amazon Prime”, with seven nominations, including three for “One Night in Miami” and “Borat Sub-Quinte Movie Movie”.

“The Father”, adapted from a play by French Florian Zeller with Anthony Hopkins, “Nomadic Land” by Chloe Gao, and “Promising Young Woman” by Emerald Fennell were ranked third with four nominations.

She distinguished “Promising Young Woman”, a feminist film set against the backdrop of the “Me To” movement, with nominations in the categories of Best Dramatic Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress for Carrie Mulligan.

The latter will compete with Frances McDormand for “Nomadland”, and Viola Davis for “Marines Black Bottom”.

On the male level, actor Chadwick Bozeman, who died last summer after gaining global fame thanks to his role in “Black Panther”, was nominated for Best Actor, after his performance in “Ma Renees Black Batum”, which is set in Chicago in the 1920s.

The list of nominees for this award included two high-caliber names, Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman, in addition to the French actor Taher Rahim and the British Reese Ahmed.
