Atalanta, who completed the match with ten men at Inter Milan, followed the Italian Cup semi-finals in soccer by beating Lazio 3-2 on Wednesday, at the Giois stadium in Bergamo in the quarter-finals.
Albanian Berat Dimcity (7), Ukrainian Ruslan Malinovsky (37) and Russian Alexei Miranchuk scored the goals of Atalanta, Wydad Muriki from Kosovo (17) and Francesco Icherby (34) Lazio’s goals.
Atalanta played most of the second half with ten players after defender Jose Luis Palomino was sent off in the 53rd minute, but that did not prevent him from scoring the winning goal, and Colombian international substitute Dovan Sabata missed a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
Lazio, the champion of the year before last when he beat Atalanta 2-0 in the final to win his seventh title in the competition, failed to take advantage of the numerical shortfall of his host despite his coach Simone Inzaghi paying Argentine Joaquin Correa and scorer Ciro Immobile in the 62nd and 71st minutes, respectively.
And meet Atalanta, seeking his second title in the competition after the first in 1963, with champions Napoli or Spezia, who meet Thursday at the end of the quarter-finals.
Inter Milan were the first to qualify for the last four by beating rivals AC Milan 2-1 on Tuesday in the opening round of the quarter-finals.
