“Bridgerton” is the most-watched series on Netflix

The first season of the American drama series “Bridgerton” set a record for viewership on the global Netflix platform.

Netflix said in a statement, Wednesday, that about 82 million families watched the drama based on Julia Quinn’s novels, in the first 28 days of its broadcast, becoming the most-watched series in the history of the streaming network.

The company added that the series “occupied the first ten places” in all the countries in which the series was shown except for Japan, and it ranked first in 83 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, France, India, and South Africa.

The romantic drama dating back to the “Regency” era at the beginning of the nineteenth century, written by Chris Van Dawson and produced by Shonda Rhimes, has caused a great sensation since it first appeared at the end of 2020, and it takes place in London in 1813 at the end of the Georgian era in Britain.

Challenging traditions
Netflix’s deputy director of original works, Jenny Howe, said in the statement that “Bridgerton” has been likened to “The Queen’s Gambit” in that it “challenges tradition, and shows that the drama is not limited in scope or audience.”
He added, “Re-imagining the events of the series is not intended to be historical. It has been designed to be more luxurious and more fun than regular drama, and this is what surprised and pleased our members.”

200 million subscribers
Netflix said it now has more than 200 million subscribers globally, after adding 8.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2020, exceeding its expectations, but the broadcast service usually keeps viewership numbers secret and receives an attack from some critics under a lawsuit that the company’s data Lacking nuances and third-party verification.

Fierce competition
The company is also facing stiff competition from new players in the digital broadcasting market, with the launch of new services such as NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Discovery, and HBO Max from CNN WarnerMedia’s parent company.
However, Netflix appears not to be fazed by the proliferation of competitors, even as Disney has amassed more than 80 million subscribers.
