The handball World Cup in Egypt is gaining great attention due to it being a historical version of the world championships, with 32 teams participating in the tournament for the first time in history. This comes in exceptional circumstances due to the Corona pandemic.
Millions of handball fans around the world will turn to Cairo tomorrow, Wednesday (January 13, 2021), to follow the kick-off in the 27th edition of the World Handball Championship for men, to be held in Egypt from January 13 to January 31.
And more than four months ago, observers praised the “distinguished” organization of the championship draw at the foot of the Pyramids of Giza, at the site that, over the past years, hosted more than one draw and an international sporting event in the arms of the ancient Pharaonic civilization and one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The ceremony for conducting the lottery was held amid the decline in the severity of the new “Corona” virus infection during the summer of 2020, but the organizers in Egypt will be on a date with a terrible challenge of a special kind during the championship activities in the coming days, especially with the escalation of the crisis again in what many considered as a second wave of the pandemic Corona.
Therefore, the organizers resorted to the bubble system or the complete “capsule” by setting up all the participating teams, technical bodies, and their assistants in hotels throughout the period of participation of these teams in the tournament without allowing any person to enter or leave these hotels.
Egypt will host the tournament for the second time in the history of the World Cup, the first time in 1999, but it was held with the participation of only 24 teams. The 1999 edition contributed to the increase in the popularity of the game in Egypt, especially with the Egyptian national team occupying a seventh place at the time, before achieving fourth place in the next tournament in 2001, becoming its best achievement in the history of the world senior championships.
